Well today has been prob one of the best days but also had the most things going on in one day. I slept awesome last night. I passed out almost immediately listening to the loud creek that muted all the hikers around me. I knew I had the sandy river crossing this morn. It was basically right after our campsite. I headed out myself and saw a group of campers who were just getting up. One kind lady followed me out and stayed with me while I attempted the crossing. I was absolutely terrified. I have not done any legit crossings since the Sierra last year. This crossing was a small/medium log but the water was somewhat strong and maybe knee deep. I got pretty nervous and lost my balance a tad and my heart leaped. I made it halfway and took some breaths on the island. I knew that I was just way too nervous to try and balance again so I decided to sit on my butt and shimmy my way across. I made it safely. I thanked the nice lady who stayed w me the whole time and hiked on.
I ended up taking the Ramona falls alternate and it was great. It was kinda sad being in the area after knowing the two girls who died a few days ago. I reached my next crossing at muddy fork. It's always so scary hearing the loud river but not knowing what it's like. This one was two very large logs kinda laid on top of each other but way high above the water. There was a loose hand line to help. I basically climbed up and hugged the log as I shimmied across. I could feel the weight of pack pulling me back a few times. It was really scary. Also no one was around so if I would've fallen then no one would know.
The rest of the day were climbs and the first switchbacks I've seen. It felt just like home. I met some nice day hikers who were sisters and asked me a bunch of qs. I got to Lola pass and realized it was already 1pm so I took a small lunch break. I was a little worried about not having enough water for the next creek since there were no updates so these other nice day hikers shared some of their water with me. I didn't have much service today but I was trying to coordinate between a bunch of ppl to get some gear to me for this weekend! My friend laura who hiked last year is coming to Pct days so I'm having her pick up a few things so I can transition into WA nicely. It's getting cold already.
I saw eve at lunch and we talked about going to the same campsite. It's been nice to see her throughout the day. The rest of the afternoon I walked slowly as my feet were hurting and I searched for berries. They are sooo yummy. Thimble, huckle, salmon and blueberries! It's really distracting and makes me walk so much slower. I got to camp and was so happy to be done. These shorter days feel so hard now. Our campsite is windy but no biting flies. I'm really tired of my dinners and am considering my stove. I think I need to carry more stuff for WA for my own luxury.
