Each year, I always want to make a year in review post but never take the time to do it, but this time, I am! 2017 was a whirlwind, and it was nice to go back on all the memories. Please note, there are lots of selfies I don't usually share, I feel like I should take more....it's interesting to see what you looked like during the whatever thing you were doing in the moment. So this is basically like my personal diary of this year. Most of them are good moments, but I also wanted to share the not so good ones.
Let's take a little trip down memory lane...in chronological order. :)
January 2017:
Snow camped at Rainy with the women's group, it was nice to wake up to alpenglow on rainy.
Soph helped me pack for my trip down to Patagonia, she's a lil safari guide too.
Flying with sharp objects is complicated.
Visited the Zpacks office down in Florida and found myself on their walls.
Experienced Florida beach for the first time since childhood.
Tented with the most gnarly views outside of Torres Del Paine.
Saw the towers for the very first time.
February 2017:
Solo tram ride in Lima, Peru.
Barannco.
Next stop was Switzerland for two weeks to visit the Shafers.
March 2017:
While I was overseas, I found out I was accepted into the WAC and started working on knots right away. Little did I know, the class would be the hardest thing I had ever done.
My ver first time rock climbing was at Spire Rock. It was cold, wet, slippery and we had to climb in mountaineering boots. I had no idea what I was doing and ended up getting stuck up there for what felt like 35 min. I had a terrible time. I could not get up the walls nor could I confidently rappel down the other side. Most terrified I have ever been in my life.
Climbed at the Mountaineers wall for the first time and once again, had the most terrible time and was stuck on the wall until dark. We were supposed to be practicing rappelling, but I couldn't even climb up the wall. I just couldn't do it. This was when I decided I needed to join the climbing gym.
April 2017:
Me rapping down at Eerie above the islands. It was okay but I still sucked at the climbing part.
I did a bunch of torturous training hikes up Mt. Si and carried a bunch of water bottles and gear for extra weight and poured them out at the top. It sucked. I finally stopped doing it in my boots and actually got under 2 hrs. My forever time will always be 2:04.
After Spire's prusik station. I got really bad bruising from the rope on my inner thigh. I also could not make it up the tree until our second week there.
Went to Vantage for the first time. Everyone talks about how awesome the climbing is here. I didn't feel the same way.
It was the first time we could climb in our shoes outside. Once again, I had a terrible time and was told I was not going to be able to climb the Tooth if I didn't overcome my mental block (trusting my feet and not being scared).
I went to the gym 3-4 times a week to practice on auto belay. I even climbed in my boots till I was finally trusting my feet and was able to climb 5.9's smoothly at the gym, with my boots. I was finally ready for the Tooth, I think.
We had nice pockets of sunshine in the spring, so the girls would hang out in the yard and relax. So much fun. I love them.
Then I stubbed my toe really bad on a desk chair in the morning when I was getting ready. This was a week or two before we climbed the Tooth. The bruising and pain continued for the next 7 weeks into my thru hike.
We had our first Snow 1 weekend at Artist Point and practiced so many things. This was our ice axe arrest station. It was my first weekend where I finally felt confident and had "fun." I liked snow travel a thousand more times than all the rock we had been doing.
We learned how to make really great walls for shelter. I had mild hypothermia the night before. Not my pic, forgot who took it, sorry.
May 2017:
I needed an escapism from all the alpine stuff, so I went down to visit Nate/Meg in BV, CO and we summited a sand dune bc we had an unsuccessful 14er.
Back to WA, we had bad weather for Alpine 1 weekend, so we climbed Hemlock Peak in a whiteout instead.
I like snow travel and not climbing on rock.
The next weekend was the Tooth with perfect weather! I finally did my first multi-pitch alpine climb. By far, the hardest thing I had ever done. Couldn't have done it without my fav climbing partner, Michelle!
I also tore up my knees/shins bc I climbed w them bc it was the only way I could get up. I would not recommend that. But who cares, I just wanted to make it to the top.
Did a little fun photo panel talk over at UW with the Voyage Magazine stduents!
June 2017:
Our last weekend for Snow 2 up on Nisqually Glacier at Rainier.
Went into a crevasse for the first time and succesfully got out.
Low angle ice station. I sucked and was so scared and was at risk for not being able to climb Baker.
Got to try out some ice climbing which was weird but fun and much better than rock to me.
We went to a Burger King after this weekend and I noticed my intense glacier goggle tan lines.
Our first weekend to attempt Baker was called off due to bad weather so we tried the following week.
We made it up 1300 ft just shy of the summit and turned around due to freezing rain and 35mph winds. It was intense, no visibility.
That was the end of our class, and I rewarded myself with a new balyage! Thanks Dani! Perfect timing for a "good hair day selfie."
We rented a cute Airbnb in Skykomish for Jackie's bach weekend, so much fun celebrating bride to be.
Cute lil decorations.
We made a delicious dinner and had fun activities planned w a great group of ladies.
I started working at the farm in Woodlinville.
I finished up my last day with the Girlfriends!
July 2017:
I started cycling again and got really bad tan lines, oops.
Also my bad glacier gaitor tans.
First successful volcano attempt on Mt. Adams.
Finally got to use my crampons for a good purpose.
?? Trying hard to not get snow sunburned.
Then it was finally time for Jackie to get married!!! Photo by Jess Hunter.
Such a fun time planning so many things w these ladies. Also, so many bad tan lines on my part. :| Photo by Jess Hunter.
Nate/Meg were in town for a wedding and they had a reunion w Jenny.
Decided to climb Glacier Peak W Nikki and Shawn the weekend before I left for PCT.
Right before we crossed the crevasse at lunch break.
I went back to the PCT finally got to walk the rim at Crater Lake. It felt like my summer just began.
I started eating like shit again.
August 2017:
I spent my first three weeks out running from mosquitos and hiding from the heat. This was my Asian safari guide look when I was trying to shield myself from the sun.
Bug pants.
Spent 6 whole days w the Grummers, hiding out from smoke.
At Cascade Locks, I saw my southern terminus pic printed on the PCT brochure/map.
I spent most of WA running from smoke and fire closures.
September 2017:
I finally made a new trail family 2 sections before we finished.
Chris and Alissa came and met me on trail at Manning Park, BC.
I finally made it to Canada after 171 days on trail.
Signed the trail register.
I finished with these two international mates and said bye forever.
Didn't get to see the docs after Stehekin so we met up in Seattle before their flight back to South Africa.
Finally got to meet Andrew and Jess in real life. So proud of them.
October 2017:
After many, many rejections, I finally found a place to live.
I spent the beginning part of this month getting my room set up to feel cozy and warm for the winter.
I visited family.
The season started to change.
So many colors down the street.
I made myself look somewhat presentable for inteviews that didn't go anywhere.
I learned that a dear friend from the PCT last year tragically lost his life.
Went climbing for the first time since the Tooth.
Planted some trees over in Cle Elum from the Jolly Mountain Fire.
Revisited the PCT/Skykomish. The last time I was here, it was covered in smoke as I hitched back to Stevens with Baton.
November 2017:
November was a somewhat depressing month. The weather also turned to rain and cold all day, every day. Lots of ups and downs with job searching and mid-life crisis realizations. But I learned how to make Asian flavor soup which was really good.
Said bye to the Zahorians for good. :(
I really needed an escapism to take a break from life and took a spontaneous trip down to the Grand Canyon w Nate/Meg.
We did R2R2R and celebrated my 31st bday down in Sedona.
Got to see New Found Glory play their 20 years of of pop punk tour.
I joined the gym to try and help my mental wellness. I also started volunteering at the food bank so I take weekly trips to downtown on the bus.
I seem to be finding more joy in trail work than actually hiking these days.
Two of my dear friends gave birth to beautiful baby boy. It was so special to me bc I knew them both before they were dating and then married. They've been consistent friends since day 1 and hearing about everything leading up to the birth of baby Max was truly a blessing.
Wow, that was a LOT. I thought I was going to condense it, but that didn't happen, oh well. 2017 was a good year. SO much happened, lots of good things, hard things. Honestly, I have no clue what's in store for 2018, but I've learned a lot in this past season. I think my new year's resolution will be to take more selfies with people, you never know if that'll be the last pic you'll ever have with them.
