Snoozed for a little bit in the morn. Today I saw many night crawlers. Lots of centipedes and a decent sized scorpion! He had huge claws, I kept walking in the warm air. It's never cold anymore in the mornings. I sleep in my bra and shorts and barely cover myself with my sleeping bag. I did good on water today. Carried enough and didn't over carry! I got to the bottom of the long climb at around 10 and stocked up on water for the next ten miles. I'm getting hungrier for lunch earlier bc I'm up earlier. So I ate some hearty things to prepare for the climb. It was HOT. But gradual. I got really into my music today and had a good pace. I'm starting to see more bear and mountain lion scat on the trail.
I took a very late lunch at around two under a tree looking out at Shasta. I had service so I was texting people and catching up on things. I started again at 3ish and decided I wanted to make it to castella to pick up my box before they close at nine. I calculated my time and would be able to make it by 830pm. So I booked it all the way down. Mainly my feet were sore and tired. I jammed out to all my fav songs and made it to the first road. I signed the trail register. It had many different colored pencils to choose from. From there, you take some other back roads and pass rr tracks until you reach the on ramp for I 5. I wished I could hitch right there into Shasta but I had to take the frontage road to castella. I had already walked over 30 miles.
Only one car passed me and I didn't even try to hitch. I make the long 2.5 mile road walk down the side of the freeway. I finally make it to amirattis market where my box was sent. It's a gas station pretty much. I walk in and the lady points to where all the boxes are. Everyone's box is spread out on the floor around the store. No organization or security. I walk around trying to find mine but it was so disorganized. I finally find it and also buy an iced tea, salt and vinegar Pringles and a coconut Popsicle. It was very hot. I sit on my resupply box and wonder if I should even try to go to Shasta. It way too late but the walk to the castle crags campground seems dreadfully far. I walk outside and it's getting dark. I observe people on who I should ask for a ride. I talk to this one lady who offered to drive me to the campground. She knew about the pct. I accepted since it was late. She dropped me off at the pct camp #25 and I see a few hikers. One of them was Whitney Shoeston.
It's pitch black and I finally set up my tent. I then decide to take a shower since my skin was really itchy. I gathered some dirty things to wash as well. I walk in the dark to the showers and they were ok. But free. The water was not warm and there were bugs everywhere. It took forever since I was washing some clothes. I used the soap that the lady from the health food store gave me. I'm so glad that came in handy! I spend forever there and then finally put on my dry clothes on my wet body. I can crawl into my tent now. By now, everyone is sleeping but I eat some dinner and get settled.
It's almost midnight and I can't believe I'm up still. I've been up for so long. I'm so tired now. I don't have to get up to hike but I want to get a ride out early since ER might take a long time. I need to make a cardboard sign too.
