I woke up this morning hoping to shower, I thought the water would've been fixed and that there would be hot water. I got into the shower stall, turned on the water and it was still cold. I couldn't make myself take a cold shower in the morning so I got out and put my clothes back on. I rather stay dirty than be frozen. Plus, I don't think I was even that dirty.
As usual, we wake up starving. Lisa stayed back to call some doctors since she can't walk much. Rusty, GB and I walked over to Kelcy's for breakfast. We walk in to this super old diner flooded with fluorescent lighting. We see a few hikers and pick a table in the dining room. There was another big group of cute old guys all having breakfast together. The walls were filled with old photographs of the history of tehachapi. It felt like a museum in there. I ordered a veggie and sausage omelette with a slice of French toast. It was so perfect. Our waitress was super nice. After breakfast, Rusty went to go meet Lisa over at urgent care and GB and I walked to the other side of town to do errands.
Our first stop was to do laundry. We gathered all of our dirty clothes and did a load together. The washer and dryers here were much nicer than the Idyllwild one. While we waited for our laundry, we made food lists and I called Holly's grandparents about Lake Isabella. I am hoping to hitch there but was also hoping the bus would be a backup option but it only runs MWF. And so I'm not super sure what time and day I will get to walker pass and there is no service. It's gonna be tricky but I am confident I will get there! Clean laundry is always amazing! Even with all the permanent dirt stains, as long as my shirt isn't crusty anymore, I'm happy.
From there, we went by big 5 and then groceries at albertsons. I needed to resupply five days. It's always funny when other shoppers approach you at the store. I guess hikers really do stick out like a sore thumb. After we bought our things, we put what we could into our packs. There was no way we'd walk all the way back to airport. We started walking to the road and I was like "We can totally get a hitch at this stop sign from the store." So I stuck out my thumb and the car right behind picks us up. Her name was Alicia and she grew up in tehachapi. We were so thankful to get a ride back so quickly! It was finally sunny but windy today. I went and checked the shower and it seemed warm so I jumped right in. The water then started turning ice cold. It must've just been warm from the pipe outside. :( Turns out they ran out of propane which is why the hot water stopped. But I took a cold shower and it was ok. I wouldn't have gone through with it if it wasn't sunny out but I dried pretty quickly in the sun while we organized our food.
All of a sudden, we see Lisa walking back with crutches and a foot brace. Turns out she needs to get an MRI to know what is really up with her ankle but they think it's a stress fracture. It's so sad. They will be taking at least a week off to see what happens and there's a good chance she will be flying home and Rusty will continue on. It's heartbreaking to see a friend get injured and have to get off trail but we all knew this was a possibility going in. She seems to be taking it well though. I finally finished my food and it was around 3pm. We literally spent all morning doing errands. It's crazy how fast the day will fly by.
We were super glad to be done with chores. Only post office is left and we will do that tomorrow. There was finally nothing to do and so I skyped my sis and Caitlyn. So fun! She's getting soooo tall and her hair is just as long as mine. It was so good to see them and that they're doing well. I miss them a lot.
GB's friend Theresa lives here and was having us over for dinner so she came and picked us up at the airport. She is married and has a little 1.5 yr old little girl named Piper. It was so nice to come to a real home for the first time! It was so cozy to be surrounded by wedding photos, books, toys and just being in a home. Theresa made us tater tot casserole and a salad and we brought over ice cream. It was super fun to hang out and share some stories.
We got tired quick and she dropped us back off around 8. I went straight into my tent and wanted to just lay down. Busy zero day. Tomorrow is slack packing 8 miles. We can do it!
